TRANZIT HOUSE
In 1997 the building of the former Poale Tzedek synagogue, disused and heavily damaged, was reincluded in the cultural landscape of the city through the Tranzit House project.
Tranzit House is the first example in Romania where the historical and symbolic value of a former synagogue is brought back to public attention through the creation of an independent cultural center. Our mission is to bring the building back into the public circuit, renovating and taking care of the architectural ensemble as well as cultivating the memory of the place. This building is a reminder of the extreme consequences of social exclusion, a space constantly replenished with new content, a place for continuous reinterpretations of possible models of coexistence.
Tranzit House is one of the pioneers of the independent movement, one of the longest-running cultural centers in Romania – an open space, a meeting place, a transgenerational collaborative exercise, and a promoter of multilingualism and conviviality. The resilience of this space is due to the many who have contributed over 26 years with their work, ideas, care, and resources.
ZIZ – ART AND SOCIAL AREA
ZIZ is a space for art and a space for community, for theatre, dance, workshops, meetings, social action.
Founded in 2020 by 4 local NGOs (Shoshin Theatre Association, Fabrica de Pensule, Colectiv A, Made in Pata Rât), ZIZ – Art and Social Area offers the Cluj public a constant, month-by-month programme, running own events as well as hosting guest performances, workshops, concerts as well as other artistic and community events. Situated on the 1st floor of the former Synagogue found on Str. Paris nr. 5, ZIZ was founded out of a desire to create a shared, welcoming space, a place that inspires you, functioning as an incubator for the community. ZIZ is presently home to Shoshin Theatre Association, Waitingroom Project and Made in Pata-Rât, open to collaboration, contributing to the formation of a closer link between arts and society.
REACTOR – A PLACE FOR CREATIVE EXPERIMENTS
Reactor – a place for creative experiments is an independent theatre founded in 2014, focusing on contemporary playwriting, artistic experiment and social themes. It produces theatre performances starting from original ideas, closely connected to present day social contexts, which they develop through a variety of creative processes. It also encourages constant artistic development by organising workshops for theatre professionals as well as the general public, and by offering residencies for emerging artists. Reactor is constantly working towards a more open and reciprocal relation with its audience, through audience developing programs, cultural mediation and community activities.
CINEMA ARTA
Opened in 1913, ARTA cinema is one of the oldest cinemas in the region that is still active today. After an extensive restoration and revitalization process initiated in 2012, ARTA has become a significant cultural hub for the local community, a catalyst for the cultural and independent sector.
At Cinema ARTA we promote cultural events, where people of different ages and interests meet in an environment that encourages communication, tolerance and understanding. We create cultural experiences that unite, inspire and become meaningful to the participants.
The activities follow three main directions:
– The main program dedicated to contemporary cinema: art-house films, independent films and documentaries.
– A curated program of multidisciplinary events, which includes concerts, exhibitions, workshops and conferences.
– The educational program which wishes to create a safe space, where young audiences can learn, develop and express themselves freely.
Our mission is to promote culture and diversity, through the interaction between different art forms and people. The impact of culture on social and urban development being essential, we wish to create an interdisciplinary platform that contributes to the social and cultural life of the city.
